Palma.—Minorca is proud of its British heritage and its years of British rule during the 18th century but the British are in retreat. The number of British residents on the island has halved in the last five years falling from 4,000 to just 2,000, according to the latest figures from the official census.
The move has been blamed on the uncertainty over Brexit, the drop in the value of sterling and the poor air links during the winter months.
But local residents point out that the figure is far higher with many British residents electing not to register. The number of British residents on Majorca has also been in decline over the last five years for similar reasons. The majority of tourists who go to Minorca on holiday are British.
